DIY HVAC Maintenance
It’s Easier Than You Think
Homeowners and business owners can do multiple things to increase the energy efficiency of their heating and cooling systems, from HVAC maintenance to regular filter changes. Of course, if your HVAC system is old and prone to frequent breakdowns, a replacement by Genesee Heating & Air Conditioning is the best course of action. However, if your equipment is in generally good condition, here are steps you can take to keep it that way.
Change Your Air Filter at Regular Intervals
Air filters “clean” the air entering your home through your AC system by trapping airborne debris, dust and pet hair. A filter left in place too long gets clogged and forces the unit to work harder in order to move air, which increases energy usage. It can also affect indoor air quality and lead to equipment breakdown. In most cases, air filters should be changed every three months. If there are pets, small children or people with allergies in the home or building, every two months is optimal.
Leave the AC on When You Leave for Vacation
It may seem counterintuitive, but turning your AC off when you are going to be away will not conserve energy. Instead, it will stress your AC system when you return home and turn it back on, because it will have to work so hard to cool the indoor air that heated up in your absence. A better strategy: Leave the AC on and turn up the thermostat a bit.
Leave Those Doors Open
Closing doors and vents blocks airflow. The resulting pressure build-up inside the ducts reduces energy efficiency.
